# 5787 (Hebrew Year)

**5787** is a year in the Hebrew calendar that corresponds to 2026-2027 CE in the Gregorian calendar. The Hebrew calendar, also known as the Jewish calendar, is a lunisolar calendar used primarily for Jewish religious observances and civil purposes in Israel. Hebrew year 5787 begins at sundown on September 11, 2026, and ends at sundown on October 1, 2027.

The Hebrew calendar counts years from the traditional date of creation according to Jewish chronology, which places the beginning of the world at 3761 BCE in the Gregorian calendar. This makes 5787 the 5,787th year since creation in Jewish tradition.

## Calendar Structure and Characteristics

Hebrew year 5787 follows the standard structure of the Hebrew calendar, which alternates between 12 and 13 months to align lunar months with the solar year. The year consists of twelve months: Tishrei, Cheshvan, Kislev, Tevet, Shevat, Adar, Nisan, Iyar, Sivan, Tammuz, Av, and Elul. In leap years, an additional month called Adar I is inserted before the regular Adar (which becomes Adar II).

The Hebrew calendar operates on a 19-year cycle called the **Metonic cycle**, where seven of every nineteen years are leap years with 13 months. This system ensures that Jewish holidays remain aligned with their appropriate seasons. Year 5787 is a leap year, containing 13 months and 385 days.

Each Hebrew year can have one of three possible lengths: deficient (353 or 383 days), regular (354 or 384 days), or complete (355 or 385 days). The variation depends on whether the months of Cheshvan and Kislev have 29 or 30 days, which is determined by complex astronomical calculations to ensure that certain holidays fall on appropriate days of the week.

## Religious and Cultural Significance

Hebrew year 5787 will contain all the major Jewish holidays and observances that occur annually. The year begins with **Rosh Hashanah** (New Year) on the first and second days of Tishrei, followed ten days later by **Yom Kippur** (Day of Atonement), the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Other significant observances include **Sukkot** (Feast of Tabernacles), **Chanukah** (Festival of Lights), **Purim**, and **Passover**.

The sabbatical year cycle, known as **Shmita**, operates on a seven-year rotation in Jewish law. During a Shmita year, agricultural work is restricted in the Land of Israel, debts are forgiven, and the land is allowed to rest. Hebrew year 5787 is not a Shmita year, as the most recent Shmita year was 5782 (2021-2022), making the next one 5789 (2028-2029).

## Historical Context and Calculation

The Hebrew calendar's epoch begins with the year 1 AM (Anno Mundi, "year of the world"), corresponding to 3761 BCE. This dating system was established by medieval Jewish scholars, particularly **Maimonides** and other rabbinical authorities, based on calculations derived from biblical chronologies and rabbinic traditions.

The calculation of Hebrew years involves complex astronomical observations and mathematical formulas developed over centuries. The calendar must balance the lunar month (approximately 29.5 days) with the solar year (approximately 365.25 days), requiring the periodic insertion of leap months to prevent holidays from drifting through the seasons.

Year 5787 falls within the current millennium of the Hebrew calendar, which began with year 5001 (1240-1241 CE). Jewish tradition holds special significance for certain millennial markers, and some religious texts discuss prophetic implications of various periods within the Hebrew calendar system.

## Modern Usage and Applications

In contemporary times, Hebrew year 5787 will be used primarily in Jewish communities worldwide for religious purposes, including dating religious documents, determining holiday observances, and marking life cycle events such as bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings, and yahrzeits (anniversary of death). In Israel, the Hebrew calendar serves as an official calendar alongside the Gregorian calendar for civil purposes.

Jewish communities use the Hebrew year for scheduling synagogue services, religious school calendars, and community events. The year also determines the weekly Torah reading cycle, with specific portions assigned to each Sabbath throughout the year according to a system that has remained largely unchanged for over a millennium.

## Astronomical Considerations

The Hebrew calendar's lunisolar nature means that Hebrew year 5787 will begin with the new moon of Tishrei, calculated according to traditional Jewish astronomical methods. These calculations take into account the molad (moment of the new moon) and various postponement rules called **dehiyyot** that ensure holidays fall on appropriate days of the week for practical and religious reasons.

The calendar's accuracy has been refined over centuries, with medieval Jewish astronomers making sophisticated calculations that remain remarkably precise. The system accounts for the gradual lengthening of the lunar month and other astronomical phenomena, demonstrating the advanced mathematical knowledge of its creators.
