# Bible Translations into Italian

**Bible translations into Italian** are the various efforts to render the Christian scriptures into the Italian language, spanning from medieval manuscript translations to modern digital editions. These translations have played a crucial role in making biblical texts accessible to Italian-speaking Christians and have significantly influenced Italian literature, culture, and religious practice over more than seven centuries.

The translation of the Bible into Italian represents one of the longest continuous traditions of biblical translation in Europe, beginning with fragmentary translations in the 13th century and continuing through numerous complete editions to the present day. Unlike some European countries where a single translation dominated for centuries, Italy has seen a rich diversity of translation approaches, reflecting both regional linguistic variations and different theological perspectives within Italian Christianity.

## Early Medieval Translations

The earliest attempts to translate biblical texts into Italian dialects began in the **13th and 14th centuries**, when individual books of the Bible were rendered into emerging Italian vernacular languages [1]. According to historical sources, **Giacomo da Varagine** (Jacobus de Voragine), archbishop of Genoa, is credited with creating one of the earliest translations of biblical material into modern Italian at the beginning of the 13th century [6].

These early translations were primarily manuscript copies, hand-copied by scribes in monasteries and religious communities. They often focused on specific books rather than complete biblical texts, and were typically created for liturgical use or to aid clergy who were more comfortable with vernacular Italian than with Latin. The linguistic landscape of medieval Italy, with its numerous regional dialects, meant that these early translations varied significantly in their language and approach.

## The Malermi Bible: First Printed Translation

The history of complete Italian Bible translations begins with the **Malermi Bible**, published by **Nicolò Malermi in 1471** [1][4][7]. This translation holds the distinction of being the first complete printed Bible in Italian, appearing just over a decade after Gutenberg's revolutionary printing press made mass production of books possible.

Malermi's translation was based on the Latin Vulgate, the standard biblical text of the Catholic Church at the time. Published in Venice, it represented a significant milestone in making biblical texts accessible to literate Italians who could not read Latin. The Malermi Bible went through several editions and remained influential for centuries, though it was eventually superseded by more scholarly translations.

## The Diodati Translation

A pivotal moment in Italian biblical translation came with **Giovanni Diodati's translation in 1607** [8]. Diodati, a Protestant theologian and professor at the Academy of Geneva, created what many scholars consider the first truly scholarly complete translation of the Bible into Italian. Unlike the Malermi Bible, which was based on the Latin Vulgate, Diodati worked directly from Hebrew and Greek manuscripts.

The Diodati Bible became particularly influential among Protestant communities in Italy and Italian-speaking regions of Switzerland. Its literary quality and scholarly approach made it a landmark in Italian biblical translation, and it remained the standard Protestant Italian Bible for centuries. Diodati's work demonstrated a commitment to translating from original languages rather than relying on Latin intermediaries, setting a precedent for future scholarly translations.

## The Martini Translation

Before the modern era, the most widely used Catholic Italian Bible was the translation by **Archbishop Antonio Martini** [4]. Martini's translation became the standard Catholic Italian Bible and remained in common use until the latter half of the 20th century. This translation maintained the Catholic tradition of working from the Latin Vulgate while attempting to render the text in clear, accessible Italian.

The Martini Bible served Italian Catholic communities for nearly two centuries, appearing in numerous editions and becoming deeply embedded in Italian Catholic culture and liturgy. Its influence extended beyond religious circles, contributing to the development of standard Italian prose style and vocabulary.

## Modern Catholic Translations: The CEI Bible

The most significant development in modern Italian biblical translation came with the **CEI Bible, published by the Conferenza Episcopale Italiana (Italian Episcopal Conference) in 1971** [4][7]. This translation marked a revolutionary shift in Catholic biblical scholarship, as it was the first official Catholic Italian Bible translated directly from Hebrew and Greek sources rather than from the Latin Vulgate.

The CEI Bible became the **official version of the Italian Catholic Church** [4][7] and represented the culmination of decades of biblical scholarship influenced by the Second Vatican Council's emphasis on returning to original biblical sources. The translation committee included leading Italian biblical scholars and linguists, ensuring both scholarly accuracy and liturgical suitability.

The CEI translation has undergone several revisions, with updated editions appearing in subsequent decades to incorporate advances in biblical scholarship and changes in contemporary Italian usage. These revisions reflect ongoing efforts to balance fidelity to ancient texts with accessibility to modern readers.

## Contemporary Landscape

Today, Italian readers have access to **multiple translations representing different theological perspectives and translation philosophies** [3][5]. Digital platforms now offer numerous Italian Bible versions, making various translations readily accessible to contemporary readers. These include both traditional translations like updated versions of the Diodati Bible and modern translations created by various Christian denominations and scholarly organizations.

The diversity of available translations reflects the pluralistic nature of contemporary Italian Christianity, with Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox communities each having preferred translations that reflect their theological emphases and liturgical needs. Modern translation projects also benefit from advances in biblical archaeology, manuscript discovery, and linguistic scholarship that were unavailable to earlier translators.

## Cultural and Literary Impact

Italian Bible translations have profoundly influenced Italian literature, culture, and language development. From Dante's references to biblical themes in the Divine Comedy to modern Italian literature, biblical language and imagery derived from Italian translations have shaped literary expression. The translations have also contributed to the standardization of Italian vocabulary and syntax, particularly in religious and philosophical discourse.

The accessibility of biblical texts in Italian has enabled widespread biblical literacy among Italian-speaking populations, influencing everything from popular culture to political discourse. Many Italian phrases and expressions derive from biblical translations, demonstrating their deep cultural penetration beyond strictly religious contexts.
