The highest reliably recorded air temperature on Earth reached 54.4°C (129.9°F) in Death Valley, California, on July 10, 1913. Death Valley regularly experiences summer temperatures exceeding 50°C, creating one of the most consistently hot environments on the planet.
At the opposite extreme, the lowest recorded temperature occurred at Vostok Station in Antarctica, where Russian researchers measured -89.2°C (-128.6°F) on July 21, 1983. These polar conditions create an environment more hostile to human life than the surface of Mars.
Precipitation Extremes
Mount Waialeale in Hawaii receives an average of 11,500 millimeters (460 inches) of rainfall annually, making it one of the wettest spots on Earth. In contrast, Chile's Atacama Desert includes regions that have received no measurable precipitation for decades, with some weather stations recording zero rainfall for over 400 years.
The most intense rainfall ever recorded occurred in Foc-Foc, Réunion, where 1,825 millimeters (71.8 inches) fell in just 24 hours during Cyclone Denise in 1966. This represents more annual rainfall than most temperate regions receive in an entire year.
