# Igreja Cristã Nova Vida (Aliança das Igrejas Cristãs Nova Vida)

The **Aliança das Igrejas Cristãs Nova Vida** (Christian Churches New Life Alliance) is a Brazilian Christian denomination with roots in the ministry of Bishop Roberto McAlister, who arrived in Brazil in 1960. Originating as the New Life Pentecostal Church (*Igreja Pentecostal de Nova Vida*), the movement developed a distinctive institutional identity combining its Pentecostal origins, an emphasis on biblical teaching, historic Christian creeds, episcopal leadership, and a system of voluntary relationships between local congregations and denominational leadership.

Based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the denomination identifies the proclamation of the Gospel, Christian discipleship, and missionary service as central elements of its vocation. Its official institutional website describes a network of more than 140 congregations, an episcopal college, and a theological education institution dedicated to preparing Christians for ministry and missions.

## History

### Foundation and early development

The history of the Christian Churches New Life Alliance is closely associated with the life and ministry of Bishop Roberto McAlister (1923–1993), a Christian missionary of Scottish and Canadian ancestry.

McAlister arrived in Brazil in 1960 and began proclaiming the Christian Gospel through a pioneering radio ministry. Although he had studied Portuguese for only about a year, his broadcasts attracted listeners and helped establish the foundations for a new Christian community.

In 1961, public worship services began on the ninth floor of the Brazilian Press Association (*Associação Brasileira de Imprensa*, ABI), in downtown Rio de Janeiro. These gatherings marked a formative stage in the development of what became the New Life Pentecostal Church.

McAlister's approach emphasized biblical instruction, personal holiness, reverence in worship, and Christian character. The denomination's historical account also highlights his opposition to materialistic approaches to religion and to transient religious fashions.

### Expansion and succession

During the 1970s and 1980s, the denomination expanded beyond its original base in Rio de Janeiro. Congregations were established in areas including Botafogo, Bonsucesso, Nilópolis, and Nova Iguaçu, while a new generation of Brazilian pastors and bishops was trained.

When Roberto McAlister died in 1993, the movement had established more than 50 churches throughout Brazil. His son, Walter Robert McAlister Jr., succeeded him as Primate Bishop.

Under the subsequent leadership, the denomination continued to develop its national organization and institutional structures. According to its official historical account, the network has grown to more than 140 congregations and has established an international presence.

Its institutional projects include a cathedral in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Rio de Janeiro, and the Bishop Roberto McAlister Institute of Christian Studies (*Instituto Bispo Roberto McAlister de Estudos Cristãos*, IBRMEC), which focuses on theological education.

## Theology and historical identity

### A historically conscious Christian tradition

The Christian Churches New Life Alliance describes itself as a community conscious of its place within the historical continuity of Christianity. Its theological approach emphasizes the relationship between contemporary church life and the biblical and historical traditions inherited from earlier generations.

According to the denomination's official statement, Christian churches should not regard novelty or cultural change as ends in themselves. Instead, they should maintain continuity with the apostolic faith and the historical practices of the Church while responding to the needs of their own time.

The practices highlighted by the denomination include:

* Faithful proclamation of the Bible.
* The celebration of baptism and the Lord's Supper.
* Ecclesiastical discipline.
* The ordination of men considered qualified for ministry.
* Traditional biblical catechesis.
* The centrality of the cross of Jesus Christ in Christian discipleship.

The denomination also acknowledges the contributions of influential Christian thinkers and church leaders from different periods. Its official list includes Polycarp, Irenaeus of Lyons, Athanasius, Augustine of Hippo, Anselm of Canterbury, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, Charles Spurgeon, C. S. Lewis, and Martyn Lloyd-Jones.

This historical orientation provides the framework through which the ICNV interprets its own identity, connecting its Pentecostal origins with a broader Christian inheritance.

## Statement of Faith

The denomination's *Declaration of Faith and Practice* consists of 14 articles that guide its preaching, teaching, and pastoral practice. The declaration identifies the Holy Scriptures as the authoritative and inerrant foundation of its doctrine.

Its principal theological commitments include the following:

1. **Holy Scripture:** The Bible, comprising the 39 books of the Old Testament and the 27 books of the New Testament, is recognized as the authoritative record of God's Word.
2. **The Trinity:** There is one God who exists eternally as three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
3. **God the Father:** God is the Creator and sustainer of heaven and earth.
4. **Jesus Christ:** Jesus is the eternal Son of God, incarnate through the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. His person and redemptive work occupy a central place in the denomination's theology.
5. **The Holy Spirit:** The Holy Spirit brings conviction of sin, participates in the believer's regeneration and sanctification, and equips Christians for witness and service.
6. **Humanity:** Human beings are created in God's image and are intended to live in communion with Him.
7. **The Gospel:** The Gospel is centered on the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, with the crucifixion and resurrection occupying a central place in the Christian message.
8. **The human response to the Gospel:** The declaration emphasizes God's sovereign election and the effectiveness of the Gospel in the salvation of sinners.
9. **Salvation:** Salvation is understood as a gift of divine grace, received through faith in Christ and directed toward the glory of God.
10. **Sanctification:** The Holy Spirit transforms believers, renewing their minds and progressively conforming them to the image of Christ.
11. **Empowerment by the Holy Spirit:** The Spirit equips Christians for faithful witness and service.
12. **The Church:** The Church is the community brought together by God through His Word and Spirit as the body of Christ.
13. **The sacraments:** The declaration addresses the administration and significance of Christian baptism and the Lord's Supper.
14. **The consummation:** Christian hope includes the visible return of Jesus Christ, the resurrection of the dead, and final judgment.

Together, these articles establish the doctrinal framework that the denomination expects its congregations and ministers to uphold.

## The Apostles' Creed

The ICNV also recognizes the Apostles' Creed as an important expression of historic Christian faith. The creed summarizes foundational Christian beliefs concerning God the Father, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Church, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and eternal life.

The denomination presents the creed as a tool for Christian instruction and public worship rather than a replacement for Scripture. Its purpose is to summarize essential elements of the faith and assist believers in understanding the biblical revelation preserved in the writings of the prophets and apostles.

The church's account places the development of the creed within the history of early Christianity, describing its evolution between the second and seventh centuries. It also refers to early baptismal formulations, including the interrogatory creed associated with Hippolytus of Rome, traditionally dated to approximately AD 215, and to a version found in the writings of Caesarius of Arles in the sixth century.

The creed's principal theological themes are the Trinity and the incarnation of Jesus Christ. Its continued use reflects the denomination's commitment to maintaining a connection with the historic worship and teaching of the Christian Church.

## Episcopal Government

The Christian Churches New Life Alliance operates under an episcopal system of church government, in which bishops exercise leadership and pastoral oversight.

The denomination adopted this structure in 1976, when its original organization faced the challenges associated with the growth and multiplication of congregations. Under Roberto McAlister's leadership, the movement established an episcopal framework, and McAlister became its first bishop. He subsequently ordained two additional bishops to assist him.

Today, the denomination is led by Walter Robert McAlister Jr., who serves as Primate Bishop. He represents the denomination both internally and externally and provides leadership in defining and communicating its institutional vision.

The Primate Bishop works alongside a College of Bishops, which contributes to the denomination's leadership and oversight. According to the ICNV's official explanation, episcopal authority is understood in terms of spiritual responsibility, recognized leadership, and the need to preserve unity among congregations.

This system is intended to provide pastoral care, doctrinal coherence, and institutional continuity as the denomination grows.

## The Alliance System

Alongside its episcopal structure, the denomination maintains an arrangement known as the Alliance System (*Sistema de Aliança*). This system defines the relationship between local congregations and the national organization.

The arrangement combines local administrative autonomy with voluntary association, pastoral accountability, and shared denominational commitments. According to the official description, pastors annually choose to reaffirm their relationship with the Primate Bishop, thereby recognizing his leadership and their participation in the wider alliance.

The system is organized around three principal commitments:

* **Doctrinal harmony:** Congregations and ministers are expected to maintain agreement with the denomination's theological foundations.
* **Pastoral ethics:** Ministers are expected to observe the denomination's pastoral code of ethics.
* **Financial responsibility and transparency:** Congregations are expected to maintain financial accountability, including the contribution of a portion of their local income to the national headquarters.

The Alliance System is therefore designed to maintain relationships among congregations without eliminating their local administrative responsibilities. It links denominational identity to mutual commitment, accountability, and cooperation under shared leadership.

The denomination grounds this understanding of unity in Psalm 133, which celebrates the blessing associated with living together in unity.

## Mission and institutional activities

Missionary activity remains an important part of the denomination's stated identity. The historical legacy of Roberto McAlister, whose ministry began through radio evangelism and developed into a network of congregations, continues to inform its institutional vision.

The ICNV presents discipleship as a central aspect of its mission, describing its community as one in which disciples form other disciples. Evangelism, worship, fellowship, and theological education are understood as interconnected dimensions of Christian life.

Its institutional activities include maintaining local congregations, coordinating denominational leadership, providing theological education through IBRMEC, and developing facilities intended to support worship and missionary preparation.

The cathedral project in Recreio dos Bandeirantes is presented by the denomination as part of its broader vision for making its religious work visible and providing a setting for worship. The associated theological institute is intended to prepare additional people for missionary service.
